Screenings

We conduct comprehensive screenings to identify potential communication disorders and determine the appropriate course of action and if an evaluation is recommended.

Evaluations

We use a variety of diagnostic tools to develop a complete assessment/picture of each individual’s current abilities and challenges. ​An evaluation can also determine needed services as well as goals that should be targeted in speech therapy.

Speech Sound Therapy

Speech sound therapy focuses on enhancing a person’s ability to produce clear and accurate speech sounds. This can help to:

  • Increase overall intelligibility and ability to be understood

  • Coordinate the movements between sounds

  • Say words that are important to you

  • Effectively communicate without frustration

  • Feel confident in your speaking abilities​

Language Development & Therapy

Receptive language is the ability to understand and process language. It includes:

  • Understanding words, sentences, and gestures

  • Understanding concepts such as directions, questions, and stories.

  • Following instructions

  • Listening

  • Identifying objects when named

  • Comprehending spoken or written information

Expressive language is the ability to convey thoughts, feelings, and ideas using words, sentences, gestures, or writing. It includes:

  • Vocabulary

  • Sentence structure

  • Grammar

  • Ability to organize and share information effectively

  • Asking questions, naming objects, or forming sentences

Language therapy targets receptive and expressive language skills as well as literacy. It will help grow your:

  • Vocabulary

  • Combine words into longer sentences

  • Use appropriate grammar

  • Understand and follow directions

  • Share thoughts, feelings, and ideas to navigate your social world and authentically participate in conversations and social interactions

Stuttering Therapy & Support

Fluency in speech therapy refers to the smooth, consistent, and uninterrupted flow of speech. It primarily focuses on addressing disruptions in speech patterns, such as stuttering (repetitions, prolongations, or blocks) or cluttering (rapid or irregular speech). Therapy is tailored to the individual’s needs, incorporating both behavioral and psychological approaches, and aims to improve a person’s ability to communicate confidently.

Key aspects include:

  • Stuttering Modification technique: Helping individuals manage and reduce stuttering moments.

  • Fluency Shaping technique: Teaching techniques like slowed speech, controlled breathing, and gentle onset of sounds.

  • Emotional Support: Addressing anxiety, fear, or negative feelings about speaking.

Social-Communication Development & Therapy

Social communication in speech therapy focuses on improving an individual’s ability to use language effectively in social contexts.

This area of therapy often addresses deficits in pragmatic language, which includes:

  • Using language for different purposes, such as greeting, requesting, or informing.

  • Understanding social cues

  • Adjusting language and communication style based on the situation or audience (e.g., talking differently to a peer versus a teacher).

  • Following conversational rules, like staying on topic, turn-taking, and repairing communication breakdowns.​​

Cognitive-Communication Therapy

Cognitive-communication in speech therapy focuses on executive function skills. Executive functions are a set of higher-level cognitive processes that allow individuals to control their behavior, manage their thoughts, and regulate emotions. Deficits in executive function can lead to difficulty initiating conversations, staying on topic, organizing thoughts for speech, and understanding complex social cues.

Speech therapy helps individuals improve the cognitive skills that enable planning, organization, memory, problem solving, judgement, flexible thinking, self-awareness, and self-control, which are crucial for effective communication and daily tasks.

Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC)

Explore alternative communication methods and assistive technology, such as picture boards or communication devices, to enhance communication abilities.

Family Education & Training

We strongly encourage family members to get involved in the therapy process because we know that your involvement is key to your loved one's success! We provide families with the knowledge, tools, and strategies to support the client's progress outside of therapy sessions within their natural, everday environments. We also dedicate time at the end of sessions to answer questions and provide home tips.

Parent coaching sessions can equip you with strategies to help your child communicate, engage in back and forth exchanges, manage mealtime and feeding challenges, and effectively create learning opportunities while playing with your child. You are your child's most important teacher!
